This British term comes from the obsolete chuff
meaning "chubby," used in the seventieth to nineteenth centuries. In
the 1800s, chuff
took on the sense of "pleased." Since the mid-1900s, chuffed has
been used to mean both "pleased" or "displeased," depending
upon the context.
